William Mark Eames papers, 1862-1864.

Letters and a memoir of William Mark Eames, who served as an army surgeon for the 21st Ohio Infantry, the Ohio Sanitary Commission, and the 157th Ohio National Guard, 1862-1864. Most of the letters were written to Eames' wife and children while he was stationed near Nashville, Tennessee. He describes marches, the weather, reports of Union sentiment among Nashvillians, and the capture of Confederate supplies within the city. Letters written from an army hospital near Murfreesboro, Tennessee describe hospital life, food, and types of patients treated. He also writes about Nathan Bedford Forrest's July 14, 1862 raid on Murfreesboro; some of John Hunt Morgan's guerrillas who were placed under his care after a skirmish at Lebanon, Tenn.; and the rumor of Morgan's visit in disguise. In May, 1864 Eames joined the 157th Ohio National Guard. His letters from this period recount his experiences at the Fort Delaware prison near Baltimore, Md. Included is a pencil sketch of one side of the prison. Eames' memoir covers his early childhood in Massachusetts, his schooling and medical training, his Civil War experiences, and reflections on politicians and life in general.
